A former New Jersey pre-kindergarten aide faces 61 child sex crime charges after prosecutors say he filmed himself assaulting students in a school bathroom and during nap time. Shaun M. Stebbins, 44, worked at Woodbine Elementary School in Cape May County from February 2022 until his arrest on March 29.
Cape May County prosecutors announced the charges on October 30: 29 counts of manufacturing child sexual abuse material, five counts of aggravated sexual assault, 13 counts of sexual assault by sexual contact, and 14 counts of endangering the welfare of a child. The 34 first-degree counts carry prison terms of 10 to 20 years each under New Jersey law; the remaining charges carry five to ten. Conviction on the maximum terms would outlast several lifetimes.
The evidence came from Stebbins himself. A search of his electronic devices allegedly revealed numerous images and videos of Woodbine Elementary students, and court documents say he filmed and performed sex acts on children in a school bathroom and during nap time.
The case did not begin at the school. Stebbins was arrested in Atlantic County, and the investigation expanded into Cape May County only after authorities in Atlantic County and Somers Point notified prosecutors in April — by then he had been employed at Woodbine for more than three years. Whatever checks stood between Stebbins and the students, the case that ended his employment began in another county, and the evidence was his own archive.
Stebbins remains in the Atlantic County Correctional Facility pending court proceedings. Cape May County Prosecutor Jeffrey H. Sutherland says his office continues to investigate, and the Special Victims Unit is taking calls from anyone with further information.
