Fans of the Malayalam superstar Mohanlal are combing through Jailer 2 frame by frame, alleging that his cameo in the Rajinikanth blockbuster was shot with a body double and polished with AI. The film, directed by Nelson Dilipkumar, is in theatres now — and the loudest complaints are coming from inside the production.
Jishad Shamsudeen, Mohanlal's personal fashion stylist and the film's costume designer, wrote on Instagram that three of the star's distinct looks were cut from the final edit and that even the scene glimpsed in the trailer was trimmed out. 'Trimming scenes involving a superstar like Mohanlal Sir is simply unnecessary,' he wrote, adding that he would not take part in a possible sequel and expressing regret to those who had placed their trust in him.
The body double, meanwhile, confirmed himself. Jobi Kodakara, a mimicry artist who has performed Mohanlal lookalike shows for nearly two decades, said he had been offered the role of the star's double on the film and posted photographs from the set. Viewers had already noticed a trailer scene missing from the theatrical cut; some now question whether AI-assisted shots were used to complete scenes featuring a face that was not always the star's own. The AI claim remains speculation. What is documented is that a double was hired, that the cameo was cut down, and that the film's own costume department is disputing the edit in public.
In an industry where the star's face is the product, substitution is the story. Mohanlal's cameo in the 2023 original Jailer turned his line 'Entha Mone?' into a hit; the sequel's trailer reduced his appearance to a two-second glimpse, and the audience arrived measuring. The audit is being run by the customers — the people who bought tickets are also the ones checking the product, publicly, and a studio has no settlement mechanism for a crowd that can freeze frames.
The original cameo produced a catchphrase. The sequel's has produced a dispute over whether the face was even his.
