US diesel prices have climbed to record highs, with the national average reaching $6 per gallon and California averaging $8, according to BNO News citing GasBuddy data. Some stations in California were listing diesel at $9, the report said.

Diesel is not a niche fuel in the US economy. It runs freight trucks, trains, agricultural equipment and construction machinery, so price spikes flow quickly into the delivered cost of groceries, household goods and building projects. BNO News notes California’s role in food supply — producing more than a third of US vegetables and two-thirds of fruits — which makes transport costs in the state a national issue.

The immediate driver is not a refinery accident or a single pipeline outage but a stack of geopolitical disruptions that raise the cost of moving oil and products. The report points to the war involving Iran and disruptions in the Strait of Hormuz, alongside the war in Ukraine as Kyiv continues to strike Russian refineries. In that environment, freight markets pay for uncertainty: longer routes, higher insurance premiums and more cautious scheduling can tighten supply even when barrels still exist somewhere.

The price comparison is stark. One year ago, BNO News reports, diesel averaged $3.70 per gallon and gasoline $3.18. The outlet estimates Americans are now paying hundreds of millions of dollars more per day for gasoline and diesel than a year earlier, with the extra daily cost potentially approaching $1 billion.

The broader inflationary effect tends to be diffuse and politically slippery. A household may not buy diesel directly, but it pays for diesel through every item that arrives by truck and every service that depends on machinery. Businesses, meanwhile, face a choice between raising prices and cutting activity — and neither option produces more fuel.

On Thursday, the report adds, US crude oil futures hit $100 per barrel for the first time since May 2022. By Friday morning, GasBuddy’s national diesel average had moved above $6.
