Algeria breaks diplomatic relations with United Arab Emirates

Algeria said it has severed diplomatic relations with the United Arab Emirates and gave the Emirati ambassador in Algiers 48 hours to comply with the decision. Infobae, citing Algerian state media, reports that the foreign ministry announced the break after what it described as a long period of restraint and attempts to preserve the relationship.

Algiers did not spell out a single triggering incident. Instead, the government cited a “growing number of provocative and hostile actions” by Abu Dhabi and said it had previously warned the UAE about consequences. President Abdelmadjid Tebboune has in recent months sharpened his public language, describing the UAE as a “microstate” and accusing it of interference in Algeria’s internal affairs and of destabilising other states in the region, according to Infobae’s account of televised remarks.

The absence of specifics is itself informative in a region where diplomatic ruptures often serve multiple audiences at once: domestic constituencies, rival capitals, and security services that trade in insinuation rather than evidence. When governments keep the bill of particulars vague, it becomes easier to escalate or de-escalate later without admitting error, and harder for outsiders—investors, airlines, and neighbouring states—to price the consequences.

The move also lands after earlier administrative steps that signalled a cooling relationship. Infobae reports that Algeria began a process earlier this year to terminate an air services agreement signed in 2013, suggesting that the dispute has already been migrating from rhetoric to practical constraints.

Algeria’s statement frames the decision as an attempt to avoid deeper divisions in the Arab world, while simultaneously choosing the most divisive tool available short of sanctions: cutting the channel that diplomats exist to keep open. The UAE had not issued a public response at the time of Infobae’s report.

Algeria’s foreign ministry says it exhausted options to salvage ties. The ambassador was told to leave within 48 hours.
