World sea surface temperatures outside the polar regions reached their highest level ever recorded for the month of July, according to scientists cited by The Guardian. The new July record surpasses the previous benchmark set in 2023, with particularly high readings reported along the Atlantic coast and in the western Mediterranean. The same reporting describes severe marine heatwaves affecting Europe’s seas during the month.
The ocean figure sits alongside a summer that has already stressed Europe’s land systems. The Guardian, citing Copernicus and the European Centre for Medium-Range Weather Forecasts, reports that western Europe experienced its hottest June–July period on record, with persistent high-pressure systems trapping heat and drying soils. Once the ground is dry, less energy goes into evaporation and more stays as heat, which the reporting links to higher wildfire risk and wider drought conditions.
The knock-on effects in the article are not framed as distant ecological damage but as operational failures in everyday infrastructure. Low river flows in parts of France, Spain, Germany and the UK are reported to have affected water supply, irrigation and power plants. In late July, two coal-fired power plants in Poland shut down due to a lack of cooling water, according to the same account. Hungary’s only nuclear power plant also shut down for the first time in its decades-long operating history because of cooling water shortages.
