OpenAI is developing a smart speaker intended as a “physical manifestation” of ChatGPT, with a reported price between $300 and $400, according to TechCrunch citing Bloomberg. Bloomberg describes the device as donut-shaped, designed to be carried around the home and placed on surfaces like a bedside table or kitchen counter. Sources cited by Bloomberg also describe “high-quality metal,” a “premium look,” and distinct “moving parts,” with a release expected sometime in 2027.
The report puts OpenAI on a collision course with a consumer category that has historically been defined by scale pricing and cross-subsidy. TechCrunch notes that Amazon’s smart speakers typically sell for far less, with prices ranging from $40 to $240. That gap is not just positioning; it reflects how the market has been built: low-cost hardware that earns its keep by pulling users into a broader ecosystem. A higher-priced device has to justify itself either with markedly better capability or with a different relationship to the user — one where the assistant is less a commodity microphone and more a paid interface to a powerful model.
OpenAI is reportedly developing the device in partnership with LoveFrom, the design studio founded by former Apple designer Jony Ive. The design emphasis suggests the company is trying to make AI hardware feel less like an appliance and more like an object people choose to keep in their living space. That matters because “always-on” products are ultimately trust products: they sit in private rooms, listen for wake words, and increasingly handle personal tasks. A premium enclosure does not change the underlying trade: convenience in exchange for data flows and dependence on a remote service.
The strategic logic is straightforward. A successful speaker becomes a default front door to an AI model, reducing reliance on app stores, browser defaults, and other companies’ operating systems. It also creates a proprietary channel for voice data, usage patterns, and household context — inputs that can improve an assistant’s performance and lock in users. For competitors, the risk is not a single device but a new layer in the stack: the assistant becomes the interface, and the phone, laptop, and smart home devices become interchangeable endpoints.
The business risks are equally clear. TechCrunch notes that smart speakers have not always been profitable, and the market can be difficult to enter. A $300–$400 device raises the stakes: fewer impulse purchases, higher expectations for reliability, and a shorter tolerance for subscription creep. If the assistant’s best features require ongoing paid access, the hardware price becomes only the beginning of the bill.
TechCrunch also notes OpenAI is being sued by Apple, which accuses OpenAI of stealing trade secrets; OpenAI denies wrongdoing. Even without the lawsuit, OpenAI’s move into hardware would place it closer to the companies whose platforms it currently depends on.
Bloomberg’s description is of a portable metal ring meant to sit quietly on a kitchen counter. If it ships in 2027 at the reported price, it will be competing less with cheap speakers than with the idea that voice assistants were supposed to be a low-margin accessory.
