Kylian Mbappé scored twice as France beat Sweden 3–0 in a World Cup last-32 match in New Jersey, according to the Evening Standard. The result sent France into the last 16 and ended Sweden’s tournament after they had finished third in their group to reach the knockouts.
France’s first goal came just before half-time, with Mbappé curling in after an earlier strike was ruled out for a marginal offside, the Standard reports. Sweden’s goalkeeper Jacob Widell Zetterström kept the score down with a series of saves as France hit the woodwork more than once and continued to create chances through Michael Olise and others. Sweden’s clearest opening arrived early in the second half when a cross found Elliot Stroud, but the chance went wide. Shortly after, Bradley Barcola doubled the lead, finishing a move created by Olise.
The match followed a familiar pattern for tournament football: a side with depth and established combinations can absorb missed chances and still pull away once the first goal goes in. France’s second-half control also showed how little margin there is for teams that qualify for knockouts via a third-place group finish; one missed header or one defensive lapse becomes decisive when the opponent can bring wave after wave of high-level attackers. Mbappé’s second goal — a one-two with Olise finished into the roof of the net — underlined the difference between creating a half-chance and converting it.
For Sweden, the evening was defined by defensive resistance and brief windows rather than sustained pressure. The Standard notes late efforts from Viktor Gyökeres and a half-chance for Alexander Isak, but France’s goalkeeper Mike Maignan was rarely forced into extended work. When Sweden did manage to break, it was often through direct balls and quick crosses, a low-cost way to reach the box that also tends to produce low-quality shots against a set defence.
Mbappé was substituted late, with France already three goals up and a next-round meeting with Paraguay set for Philadelphia. Sweden left the tournament with their goalkeeper having been among the busiest players on the pitch.
France scored three without needing a late surge. Sweden’s best moments were the ones that did not end with a shot on target.
