Scott Hastings died aged 61 in an Edinburgh hospital on Sunday, the Scotland Rugby Union said, after the former international centre’s condition deteriorated rapidly during cancer treatment. Hastings won 65 caps for Scotland and was selected for two British and Irish Lions tours, to Australia in 1989 and New Zealand in 1993, according to the Guardian.

For Scottish rugby, Hastings’ career sits in a period when the national team’s identity was built as much on defensive resistance as on flair. Scotland head coach Gregor Townsend, who played alongside him, singled out Hastings’ defence in the 1990 grand slam win over England as decisive — a reminder that reputations in international sport are often made in a handful of moments that teammates and opponents keep replaying long after the result is filed away.

Hastings also shared an unusually long overlap at the top level with his brother Gavin, the full-back, playing 51 internationals together. That kind of family pairing is a marketing gift for unions and broadcasters — a ready-made narrative that sells tickets and airtime — but it also reflects a narrower pipeline in elite sport, where a small number of clubs, schools and networks keep producing the same names.

After retiring, Hastings moved into broadcasting, extending his public presence beyond the years when most athletes disappear from view. Media work rewards recognisability and strong opinions, and it can turn a former player into a permanent intermediary between the sport’s administrators and its audience — a role that becomes more valuable as unions look for revenue outside matchday receipts.

The Scotland Rugby Union said Hastings’ death was announced by his daughters, Corey and Kerry-Anne Hastings. The statement also noted that he died on the birthday of his late wife, Jenny.

Hastings’ playing career ended years ago, but the union’s announcement still led with his cap count.
