Two Syracuse police officers were shot and a third was injured during a day-long standoff on Saturday that began with a call about a man with a machete, according to Syracuse Police and reporting by BNO News. Police said the incident started around 6 a.m. near Tyler Court, close to the public-housing area known as The Bricks. Officers obtained a search warrant, and when they moved to execute it the suspect opened fire from inside a residence.

Authorities issued repeated public warnings as the situation dragged on. Syracuse Police told residents to avoid the area and later urged people to shelter in place and stay away from windows as shots continued. Multiple agencies responded, including New York State Police, Syracuse SWAT, the Onondaga County Sheriff’s Office, Syracuse Fire Department and Syracuse University campus police.

Chief Mark Rusin said the initial call involved reports of a person threatening people with a machete and that a dog had been cut. The exchange escalated into hours of gunfire, with police returning fire while evacuations were carried out by bus from nearby buildings. By late afternoon, police said the suspect had been taken into custody and that there was no further threat to the public.

The three injured officers were taken for treatment and were reported to be in stable condition. Police did not immediately release the suspect’s identity or say whether the suspect was injured. The scene remained active after the arrest as investigators worked through the search-warrant execution and the shooting itself.
